# Video by HWIS Students wins NYU's "Rock That Movie" competition

On Friday, June 14, 2019, HudsonWay Immersion School's grades 2/3 students received the Grand Prize at the **Rock That Movie 2019** Awards Ceremony held by the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. This is the first time an elementary school has ever won the highest honor at Rock That Movie.
The competition provided our teachers, students, and parents with a wonderful and memorable experience. The theme for this year's competition was "When the past meets the future"—272 students from 24 schools, with a total of 19 teachers supervising, submitted 40 videos, working within this theme, to demonstrate their Chinese language arts skills. The videos were judged, by future teachers in the Chinese Language Education program at NYU Steinhardt, who rated them on four domains: 1) Content & Story-Telling, 2) Film-making and Technical Skills, 3) Linguistic Accuracy and 4) Fluency and Comprehensibility.
We at HWIS are very excited about our students' spectacular achievement in winning the top prize at this year's Rock That Movie competition. It is an honor and a privilege to have the language arts proficiency of our students recognized by as venerable an educational institution as the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
And so we would like to send out a special thanks to all of those who made our Grand Prize victory at this year's Rock That Movie at NYU possible.
First and foremost we must first give a huge thanks to Shanshan Zhang and, her mentor, Master Teacher Sherry Ma, for their dedication to this project.
And of course we must also commend our Grade 2/3 students Desmond Parker, Wyatt Tse, Lex Martin, Cole Perkins, Alessia Rosa, Sage Morgan, Leah Cohen, Xavier Chen and Chayse Jones for their talent and virtuosity, and hard work on the film.
**About "Rock That Movie"**
*The Rock that Movie video competition was started in 2014 by Chinese teachers Bing Qiu of Bronx High School of Science and Xuan Wang, then of Suffern Schools, now of Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. They were looking for ways to inspire their students and themselves. The competition was developed with a view towards developing a community of Chinese teachers and learners, promoting teaching of language for meaning and communication, as well as promoting project-based learning. The first year, only a few schools participated. In the 2018 competition, more than 10 schools and 150 students submitted more than 30 videos. Participants included students from elementary school through high school.
