What Is Immersion?

Immersion education is a methodology that teaches major subjects like language arts and literacy, math, science, and social studies, in 2 languages—a “target” language (or second language) and English—enabling students to become bilingual and biliterate while learning state mandated core curriculum.

Immersion education is not only the best education in learning a second language: it’s the best education, period. When a child is immersed early and consistently, the process changes his/er brain in the following ways:

Faster and native-like acquisition of two languages. Immersion is the most effective model for students to become highly proficient at a second language, and learning a second language does not negatively impact performance in English: bilingual students outperform monolingual students in reading and math scores.

Higher IQ and cognitive flexibility. Students learning two languages at once show enhanced problem-solving & creativity skills. They learn that there are multiple ways to represent an object.

Stronger development of executive function. Bilinguals excel at disregarding extraneous information that is not relevant to a task. This ability, called executive function, is continually developed when a child chooses which language to use in a given situation.

Higher EQ and refined social skills. Bilingual students develop an innate ability to take risks, and to see things from multiple perspectives, thus developing greater emotional intelligence.
