We congratulate Charles on all of his victories, a testament to his maturity, composure, and ability to think carefully through situations. In addition to instruction at St. Nicholas Chess Club, Charles receives training from NYChess Kids, a popular HudsonWay After School Enrichment program. Charles has only been participating in chess tournaments since September 2014. He loves sharpening his skills by playing against other Kindergartners, and in some cases, older children from 2nd to 11th grade. Back in October, Charles won both the K-1 U400 (USCF Under 400 rating) section of the Avenues Chess Tournament and the K-1 U500 section of the Anderson Chess Tournament in New York City. Many tournaments later, Charles’s rating has risen as high as 720. The Kindergarten section of the 2014 K-12 Nationals had 68 participants from across the country. The tournament was 7 matches and was played over 3 days with time controls of 90 minutes for each player. Charles entered as the 12th seed in the Kindergarten section based on his results at past competitions. After facing the tournament’s toughest group of participants ever, Charles surprised everyone by finishing 7th place in the country, with 5 out of a possible 7 points! That made Charles the number 1 Kindergartner in New York City out of the city’s 18 entrants, as well as the youngest entrant to finish in the Top 10.
